The story and the women behind Chica Gringa …
We are so excited you have taken part in our Mid Life Dream, Chica Gringa. We are two friends that met about 10 years ago through our children. Here’s a little bit about each of us.
Hola! My name is Erika Ganey, the “Chica”, I was born in San Miguel de Allende and lived there for the first seven years of my life. I then moved to Austin, Texas, but spent summers and holidays in San Miguel de Allende with my extended family and very much felt it was my home as much as Austin. I have been married to my soulmate Tom for 19 years and we have three children, Isabella and Sean Thomas, who keep us busy with their sports/academics and stepdaughter Erika who lives and works in Houston. My family and I love to travel back each year and enjoy the comforts of home with my relatives, the food, and the culture of San Miguel de Allende provides.
I am a full time educator with over 20 years of experience and currently I am the language campus coordinator and interventionist. Jewelry, color and fashion have always been a passion of mine and now thanks to Chica Gringa, I am able to explore my creative side and share with you the love, the art and the style of beautiful San Miguel de Allende.
Hi! My name is Jill Van De Walle and I am quite clearly the “Gringa” in this business venture.
My husband Tony and I have been married for 20 fun years. I am a Mom to Morgan and Taylor, and have been the biggest cheerleader of their lives for the past 15 years. I retired from my banking career 13 years ago to become a very proud stay at home Mom and wife of a business owner. In this role, I have loved believing in other people's dreams and helping them come true!
This venture is now my midlife dream and has given me so much joy sharing creative ideas through accessories while using my business degree knowledge I gained at Texas A&M University. My Spanish is school taught, and forgotten, but my love of travel to Mexico brought us to San Miguel de Allende this past summer. Thanks to Erika as our travel guide, we fell in love with Erika's enchanting hometown and so it began.
Chica Gringa was started in the mercado one afternoon when we saw beautiful products that we knew other women would love as much as us. This started the spiraling of thoughts and the brainstorming of ideas and before we knew it, Chica Gringa was born.
The relationships we've formed with our artisans are rooted in Erika’s family history and relationships. We have since traveled back and have enjoyed getting to know each of them by watching and learning about their beautiful craft, while Erika does the talking, and Jill tries. Laughter is an international language!
We are growing along with the business and we learn something new every day. This process is what pushes us out of our comfort zones and thanks to you; we are truly having more fun than ever anticipated.
We thank you for visiting Chica Gringa!
